Prescription Coverage
Part D and beyond
Prescription coverage, simply explained.
A short overview of how seniors actually pay for prescriptions — including the penalty most people don't know about.
The four main paths
- Standalone Part D. A separate drug plan alongside Original Medicare and a Supplement.
- Advantage with built-in drugs. Drug coverage is bundled into the plan.
- Employer or retiree drug coverage. Must be "creditable" to avoid late penalties.
- Manufacturer or pharmacy programs. Sometimes useful for specific drugs.
Four questions to ask before picking
- Is every drug I take on the plan's formulary?
- What tier is each drug? (Tiers change copays.)
- Are my preferred pharmacies in-network?
- Is there a deductible, and how does the coverage gap work this year?
