Prescription Coverage

Prescription Coverage visual guide
Part D and beyond

Prescription coverage, simply explained.

A short overview of how seniors actually pay for prescriptions — including the penalty most people don't know about.

The four main paths

  • Standalone Part D. A separate drug plan alongside Original Medicare and a Supplement.
  • Advantage with built-in drugs. Drug coverage is bundled into the plan.
  • Employer or retiree drug coverage. Must be "creditable" to avoid late penalties.
  • Manufacturer or pharmacy programs. Sometimes useful for specific drugs.

Four questions to ask before picking

  1. Is every drug I take on the plan's formulary?
  2. What tier is each drug? (Tiers change copays.)
  3. Are my preferred pharmacies in-network?
  4. Is there a deductible, and how does the coverage gap work this year?
